Liesure Time

To me this is a great image. I can almost imagine I am sitting there in a chair watching while this man and wife spend maybe a Sunday afternoon, him reading the paper while she works on a tune from the piano. It feels like a great day.

Vintage Family

Away from the postcards for a day anyway. Just going through my books today and saw this, one of my more favorite pics although I have no info on it aand its small. Just like the group, to me typical early America. Too bad their descendants got to the point where nobody was around to care enough and this ended up in an estate sale somewhere.

Xenia Fire Dept

A postcard from Xenia Ohio Fire Department with the horse drawn equipment. Curious I paid a visit to the Xenia website. They have a history, unlike the village I live in which was incorporated in 1957. Xenia has had a Fire Department since 1875 and started phasing out the horses in 1914 and 1915, about the time this card was made.

Home Delivery

We can still get home delivery of milk although I don't know anyone that does. I don't drink it much but when I did I liked it best really cold and out of a GLASS bottle. I don't know if there is a reason or just me but it tastes better out of glass than plastic or waxy cartons. So does pop for that matter but the plastic is not that bad. For milk plastic just kind of ruins it for me. Cold was harder back in the day I'm sure, at home or for this fellow, maybe some kind of ice storage in his wagon?

Hotel Calkins, Clare Mich

I like this postcard for a number of reasons. I'm basically fond of the architecture of the period to start with and whoever composed this put a little of everything in it to show the time period. Theres the auto in the front along with three seperate horse drawn carts of differing types and the people. I suppose some might say the pic is a little busy but to me its perfect.

Apparently the Hotel Calkins is no more or at least I can't find any reference to it with a google search. There is a Hotel in Clare built around the same time that still operates, the Doherty but nothing about the Calkins, too bad.
I've included the back here, interesting as the writer makes reference to the travel differences between auto and horse.

More Postcards

At the risk of being boring I intend to stick with the postcards a few days although after this I do have some with differing subject matter. For today though, two more pretty girls, both these cards posted in London in 1912.

I love the coloring on these old cards not to mention of course the girls hair styles.

Another Postcard

This postcard is French, pretty girl on the front which is good in any language. It was not posted but the back is full of writing. I do not speak, read French, anybody able to translate?

Birthday Cutie

I apologize for neglecting the blog this long, honestly didn't realize it had been eight days. This sweetie is worth waiting for though. A postcard that was mailed in 1912. This was made in Germany but mailed in the USA.

Claire Windsor

A postcard featuring Claire Windsor, silent screen film actress. Claire enjoyed some success but like many didn't do well with the switch to talkies. She was a looker though as this postcard testifies to. She also had a long life, passing away in 1972 at the age of 80.

Photobooth pics

They had photobooths until recent history. I remember them in my twenties anyway. People then would use them to get ID pictures or kids got in and goofed around. They seemed to be used more earlier in the century though. I enjoy this one for a couple of reasons. First I think the woman has a very interesting look about her, not sure what it is. Not that I find her a raving beauty but in a way she is I guess. Easier to define and more importantly is the picture with her and her child. I can almost feel the love coming from her as she holds the boy.

Eatonville Faculty

This photo is marked on the back Eatonville Faculty 1917/18. Unfortunately if I ever knew I have forgotten where Eatonville is so can't name the state.

Bums

Thier discription, not mine. That being what they wrote on the bottom of this picture of two girls outdoors with parasols. Parasols something seen in a lot of these vintage snapshots but not so much on the street these days. The year isn't marked on the picture but it came from an album I bought and if I remember right it was all early 1920's or so.

Well Dressed Ladies

Two nice looking women dressed for another studio shot, also with a postcard back but this one trimmed down to fit whatever album it was in. Again I can't date it but guess maybe 1910 or so. Love the hats and the ladies muffler or whatever that handwarmer thing is. The headwear would have been good for keeping the sun out of thier eyes I imagine. I have read that with some of the large hats the girls would have to pin them to thier heads to keep them from blowing away.
