More from the same album

Two more that came from the same family as yesterday but not the same location. The picture with the calf is marked on the back Waverly New York, 1919 and the other is Chambersburg, June 1918. It was nice of these folks to label the pictures like that. Lots of people do or mark in the album under the picture and sometimes even a little narrative which is great but many others figure nobody but family will ever look and they would know what it is. I, of course love the pictures but it's always kind of sad to me that in that family the line ran out where there was anyone that cared anymore.

Down On the Farm

This came from an album from the Philadelphia area and is marked on the back "tollgate 1919". The family the album belonged to was both urban and rural, the rural seeming to be an offshoot of the people who constructed the album as there is more urban. They seemed to have been well off as the pictures were alll taken with a good quality camera and the cars and such are high end. I think one of them was in the car business as there is a picture of a dealership in there.

While I'm pretty sure I haven't posted these yet I, being a dis-organized person am running into difficulty remembering what I have and haven't posted so I apologize in advance if I happen to post something twice. When I started this blog I thought to myself , "self, this is a good way to organize and catalogue your collection." Unfortunately I sometimes have good plans but am lousy at carrying them out. They are all still there on the computer drive though so there is still a possibility I might do what I had planned.

Looking Prim and Proper

Thats the thought I have when I look at this picture anyway, not only the dress which has that look to me but her posture and the expression, the whole thing. Of course what do I know, she was probably the original wild child.

Chief Justice 1900

I do apologize for the poor scan. Beside photos I also collect old magazines because aside from interesting reading they are full of photographs of course. This is from the March 1900 isue of

The Successful American Illustrated and is a portrait of then Supreme Court Chief Justice Melville Weston Fuller. I was prompted to post this due to the recent appointment to the Court. With the photo is a short biography of the subject. Other then Justice Fuller the magazine features the rest of the Court, men and women of the White House, Secretaries of War Navy, etc, many Senators and important businessmen. I'm sure Mike would find it fascinating, too bad we don't live closer as I would be happy to loan it too him. I probably wont post any more of it as it's hard to get a good scan without taking the magazine apart but not to worry, I am far from out of photos to post.

Two more Lucy

Two more pictures of the girl who was standing in the boat, showing off a couple of her more flamboyant hats. I love stuff like this although I'm sure women today wouldn't care to wear such headwear. Tending the garden in the yard is one thing but toting it around with you might be too much.

Not George Wahington

The first President was famous for that painting of standing in a boat but this is not he. This is two pictures of a lady named Lucy, recent aquistions from my favorite Ebay seller. There are other pictures of Lucy and in my view she had a classy look in all I saw. She was a good dresser for sure even if she probably failed her boating safety class.

Goat Cart

I see a lot of these pics with the goats pulling a cart with kids. Maybe before the move to more urban living a lot of people had goats? Probably safer and smarter then the little motor cars some people buy thier children to ride around when there isn't anywhere for them to do so. When not pulling the cart the goat could be tethered in the yard and do the mowing for you also.

Not to mention the milk and if things were tough enough goat meat for dinner. I would be tempted to go out and get one myself but I think these days it's illegal to keep a goat where I live. The picture was taken in Bloomington Illinois and the children are Elinor 20 months and Vivian 4 years old. No mention of the year.

The other picture also has no year or any other information. When I pulled this one out I couldn't remember if I had posted it before. I don't think so but was too lazy to backtrack and check. The outfits are worth a second look even if I did though.
